“The Red Tent” by Anita Diamant is the story of Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah. Her story in the bible is but a brief, violent chapter in the book of Genesis. Jacob’s twelve sons are much better known. Particularly Joseph – of the Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Diamant imagines a rich world for Dinah that weaves ancient traditions, including midwifery, into a whole picture of what it was to be a woman in biblical times.
I’d always been hesitant to read this novel because it takes place so long ago. However, Diamant’s prose is so rich and vibrant that it makes the time and place vivid. The story of Dinah is compelling and insists you keep reading. I highly recommend giving it a read.
