Star Crossed Love

The_Fault_in_Our_StarsJohn Green’s “The Fault In Our Stars” is a brilliant young adult story of love, cancer and friendship that will speak to a person at any age.  You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll cheer the characters on.

Hazel is a 16 year-old cancer patient.  She has a terminal type of thyroid cancer that has metastasized to her lungs and is slowly drowning her.  She is still alive thanks to a drug trial, but none of the doctors can predict how long it will work.  She attends a Cancer Kids Support Group and there she meets Augustus Waters for the first time when their mutual friend Isaac brings him to a meeting.  Isaac is losing his eyesight to cancer and Augustus has lost a leg, but is in remission.  Hazel and Augustus instantly bond and the story shares the ups and downs of being a kid with cancer, falling in love and dealing with impending death.

I just loved this story!  The characters were quirky, charming and very believable.  Augustus is somewhat eccentric and soulful, while Hazel is practical, funny and engaging.  The story was beautifully written in a fresh style that didn’t drown in what could be a very weighty subject.  It was emotional without being depressing.

I highly recommend this story for any age.
